Wedding Music DJs

Wedding music DJs are in abundance, but good wedding music DJs are a little harder to find. Of course, if you are going totally informal, hey, the YMCA might be just perfect. I have yet to see an event where that didn't get people up and moving!

The local club hopping DJ that you know and love so well may be great in thebars but he may not be what you need for your wedding. You need someone whois familiar and sensitive to the special requirements of a wedding event.

You are not looking for the "get plastered, look stupid dancing to "YMCA" by the'Village People'" mentality...you are looking for something a little classier.

To select your wedding music DJ, the same advice applies as when choosing a band...

  • Get recommendations from friends and caterers.

  • Get references from potential DJs and check them out. Ask if he was personableand performed well as an emcee. Did he keep the guests moving? Did he know whento shut up? Sometimes DJs can be a little crass! You don't want anyone burstinginto tears because the DJ was insensitive and went overboard with the jokes!

  • Talk to the DJ. See him perform somewhere if you can or ask to see a videoof one of his wedding performances. Observe his style. Does he know what'sgoing on and announce events appropriately? You don't want him firing up the"chicken dance" when everyone is awaiting the cutting of the cake! :0)

  • Check out his play list. If he is good, he should have just about anything you can think of.If he is missing something, ask if he will play music you provide. Does hetake special requests? Go over the list of songs you would like played but don'ttell him when to play them. If you do this, you might as well provide the musicyourself. If he is a good DJ, he will observe the crowd and know what to playand when to play it. You know what you want to hear but remember that youwill have guests from 9 - 90! Your DJ will know best how to keep them happy. That's his job!

  • Let him see where he will be performing. If it is outdoors, make sure therewill be suitable power sources and of course keep the weather in mind. Have an alternate plan location on stand-by should the weather force you to move indoors.

  • Make sure your DJ knows the dress requirements.

  • If he is going to act as your emcee, personally go over the names of the peoplehe will be introducing so he knows how to pronounce them properly.

  • Make sure when you select your DJ that he will be the one performing. Nopoint in interviewing him on his capabilities if there is a chance he will send asubstitute on the day of your event!

  • As with any service your are hiring, check insurance, deposits, any "hidden" fees, overtime rates and cancellation fees.

After interviewing several wedding music DJs, are you happy and confident with yourselection? If you are, get everything in writing so that both you and the DJ areclear on what is expected, then...make copies! That issound advice for anything you do in this world!
